Suicidal exuberance

LIKE previous years, one-wheeling cost the precious lives of at least 14 young boys on Independence Day, in mindless displays of joy in different parts of the country. One should have thought that the bitter lesson of the past had been learned, and young minds would find other avenues of celebrating the national event, but sadly they reverted to the same folly of riding motorbikes on a single wheel and performing acrobatic tricks, despite the police posted in force at the sites where they believed the display of suicidal exuberance would take place. It is a moment of reflection both for parents and the authorities, who must realise the urgent necessity of providing gainful and productive outlets for young people's energies. For instance, more stadiums and playgrounds, entertainment and recreational centres, could prove quite helpful in absorbing their attention.
