Justified demand

CERTAIN concerned organisations like the Pakistan Labour Party and Anjuman-e-Muzairin of Punjab held a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on Sunday demanding the cancellation of the allotment of agricultural land to some high army officials in various parts of the province. They declared that the allottees would not be handed over possession of the land under any circumstances. The issue attracted the attention of the media several times during the Musharraf regime when the provincial government of Pervaiz Elahi had allotted 90 squares of land at Renala Khurd in 2007. No action was taken even though the allotment violated a Supreme Court order. It added to the woes of the agriculturist community, which had not forgotten earlier similar instances at Okara, Pakpattan, Depalpur, etc. Now that a political set-up runs the country's affairs, one expects a favourable reaction to the demand and re-allotment of the land to landless farmers.
