A bleak scenario

WHILE giving vent to his anger and frustration, Chairman National Assembly Standing Committee on Education Abid Sher Ali said on Monday that the government was deliberately trying to downplay the case of alleged favours given to Farah Hameed Dogar, daughter of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. He remarked that he wanted to live up to the expectations of the people by being neutral, but regretted that he might not be able to do so because of the government's support for Chief Justice Dogar. What happened on Monday proved that he was right. The committee's session took an awkward turn when some of the parliamentarians belonging to the PPP forced the mediamen out of the conference room, saying that the matter ought to be discussed behind closed doors. That incident showed that the government was interested in hushing up the matter before the committee could come up with a conclusion unfavourable to Justice Dogar. The political leadership, with its public rating already very low, had better take into consideration the repercussions of this highly flawed approach. Its attempt at preventing the law from taking its rightful course is something it can ill afford.
