Rawalpindi - Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shehbaz Sharif said that justice would be provided to the family of two brothers who were gunned down by police in the limits of Police Station News Town on June 6.
The chief minister said that he was personally monitoring the double murder case and would not allow any police officer to mould the investigation of the case.
The CM also announced Rs1.5 million compensation each for the deceased besides promising the family of providing a three marlas house.
The CM Punjab was talking to media men on Thursday after condoling the death of two brothers Shakil Butt and Zeeshan Butt with their family at Muzamil Town, House Number 22 at Shakrial. He was flanked by Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
Talking to media men, CM Punjab Mian Shehbaz Sharif expressed his sorrow over the death of two brothers at the hands of Muhafiz Squad and added that the bereaved family would be provided justice come what may. He said that police have no right to shoot people down on roads and in streets.
The CM, on the occasion, announced Rs0.5 million each on his behalf while Rs1 million each on behalf of Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif as compensation for the victim family. He said the government would also give a three marlas house to the parents of the deceased.
Earlier, Mian Shehbaz Sharif expressed his grief with parents of two brothers, saying; “Your family has faced a big tragedy. Though I cannot bring back your sons, yet there will be justice and I will punish the killers as per law of the land,” he promised.
He said that every body was weeping over the horrific incident occurred in Rawalpindi. The CM also obtained information about the case from the bereaved mother of Shakil and Zeeshan and assured her that the killers would be punished at all costs.
Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also expressed his grief with the family over murder of their two sons.
He said the killer cops would be brought to justice without any delay. Both leaders offered Fateh and prayed for departed souls of two brothers.
Tight security arrangements were made on the occasion to avoid any untoward incident.
Regional Police Officer (RPO) Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja, City Police Officer (CPO) Israr Ahmed Khan Abbasi and SSP (Operations) Karamat Ullah Malik were also present on the occasion to review security arrangements.
Meanwhile, police apprehended the fourth cop who had gunned down the two brothers when they riding on a motorcycle breached a check point (Nakka) in the limits of Police Station New Town on June 6. “The arrested cop, who is also the main accused in the double murder case, was identified as Umair,” disclosed the Regional Police Officer (RPO) Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja here on Thursday. However, the investigation officer of the case said that he had no knowledge about arrest of Umair.
“The RPO, in a statement, said that a police constable had opened firing on two brothers riding on a motorcycle at a police nakka in the limits of Police Station New Town a couple of days ago and as result both Shakil Butt and Zeeshan Butt died,” he said.
He said that three cops, including an assistant sub inspector, were arrested by police but the fourth cop Umair, who had opened firing on them managed escape from the scene.
The RPO said that he had constituted a special police team comprising SSP (Operations) Karamat Ullah Malik, Acting SP Rawal Division Dr Ghias Gull, DSP New Town Circle Faisal Salim, SHO Police Station New Town Tahir and Investigation Officer (IO) Sub Inspector Muhammad Hayyat to arrest the fleeing cop. “The police team arrested the accused Umair and shifted him to police station for investigation,” he said. RPO Wisal Raja said that no police officer or cop was above the law, saying justice would be provided to the victim family.
The two brothers were shot dead by cops of Muhafiz Squad on June 6 in New Town area when they did not stop at police check point. A murder case against four cops was filed. Earlier, three cops, including an ASI were handcuffed by police. Interestingly, Investigation Officer Muhammad Hayyat who according to RPO was part of the raiding team, when contacted by The Nation, expressed his complete ignorance about the arrest of Umair. “I do not know that Umair is arrested by police. I am in Lahore and now going back to Rawalpindi,” he said. A source disclosed that police picked up Umair from Peshawar during a raid.
In a separate press release issued by office of the City Police Officer denied the new item appeared in a section of press that police had murdered the two brother after snatching Rs2,75,000 cash from them in New Town area on June 6.
