LOS ANGELES-Katy Perry has become the first person to reach 50 million followers on Twitter. The pop star overtook Justin Bieber on Friday who trails by about 800,000 followers. Perry’s following has increased extensively over the past few months thanks in part to the success of her latest album, “Prism.”
Helen Mirren was honored as woman of the year by Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals on Thursday. The Oscar-winning actress received thunderous applause when she was challenged to twerk on stage and proved - at 68 - she can still move better than women half her age. Finally, Jennifer Lawrence is reportedly in talks to star in yet another David O. Russell film - this according to The Hollywood Reporter, who says the director wants Lawrence to star in a film about the inventor of the Miracle Mop. If Lawrence did take the role, it would be her third Russell film - the first two, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle earned her 2 Golden Globes, a Best Actress Oscar win, and a Supporting Actress Oscar nod.
Twitter Counter, a service for tracking Twitter usage, predicted that Perry, 29, whose Dark Horse featuring Juicy J is atop this week’s Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, would roar through the 50 million barrier sometime Friday. On Thursday, her katyperry account claimed 49,989,780 followers. Crazy, isn’t it? said Twitter Counter in an email, adding that Perry who tweets regularly to her fans, but follows only 130 people herself, “never really shared her Twitter milestones.” Teen idol Justin Bieber dethroned Lady Gaga as the most followed Twitter user in January last year, but ceded the top spot to Perry in November, with US President Barack Obama in third place. Bieber had 49,200,172 followers who no doubt were closely following his recent run-ins with the law, including charges of driving under the influence in Florida and misdemeanor assault in Canada. Lady Gaga, now in fourth place with 41,026,779 followers, made Twitter history when she became the first to claim 20 million followers just less than two years ago, in March 2012.
