DIRECTOR Danny Boyle has returned to his home town in Greater Manchester to show off his Oscar. The 52-year-old arrived to gathered crowds outside St Mary's Social Club in Radcliffe, Bury, where his family and supporters watched the ceremony. The film Slumdog Millionaire won eight Oscars, including one for Boyle as best director and the best picture prize. Boyle mentioned the club in his acceptance speech and said locals were "very proud" of his success. He is now being considered for the honour of Freeman of the Borough of Bury, by the local council. Boyle kept to a promise to mention the club, where his father Frank is a regular, if he won the Oscar. He said he took his Golden Globe and BAFTA to the club a few weeks ago. "The first thing anyone said to me here was 'how did someone like you win a BAFTA?' and that's exactly the sort of thing you need saying," he said. "They are very proud and it's a lovely environment." Boyle said he drank lemonade at the club when he was a child with his father, who used to run it. "He used to get up and sing 'oh Danny Boyle', which was pretty embarrassing when you're 11 years old," he said. Boyle said music was one of his biggest influences and mentioned Bury band Elbow, who are also being considered for a Freeman honour, among his favourites. Boyle is also directed the films Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and The Beach. - BBC
