An ultra-sound has confirmed one of the Melbourne Zoo's elephants is pregnant. The zoo is celebrating the pregnancy of a 15 year old endangered Asian elephant, named "Dokkoon". It is the first elephant pregnancy at the Melbourne Zoo. It is also the first artificial insemination pregnancy at any Australian zoo. The elephant's pregnancy was confirmed by ultrasound examination carried out on Saturday by fertility experts from Berlin working with the zoo's veterinarians. Victorian Environment Minister Gavin Jennings said the new regional breeding program aims to create an insurance population of the critically endangered asian elephant species. "With another elephant already pregnant at Taronga Zoo, there is every indication that the regional breeding program is off to an excellent start," he said. Dokkon is one of eight elephants that arrived in Australia from Thailand in late 2006. The elephant ultrasound shows a black sack of amniotic fluid. Inside that, is the tiny elephant embryo which is only 3 millimetres across. The elephant has a lot of growing to do before it is born in 22 months time. They are usually over 70 kilos at birth and Dokkoon currently weights about 2,500 kilos. - ABC Online, Australia
