Los Angeles-Actress Olivia Munn turned down the role of Ryan Reynolds’ girlfriend in Deadpool because she wanted to be a Marvel character which kicked butt. Deadpool was a massive hit for the company earlier this year (16), securing the biggest ever February opening for an R-rated movie, but in a new interview with American Airlines’ American Way magazine, Olivia insists she has no regrets over not taking the part.
Keen to avoid playing a superhero’s girlfriend, the 35-year-old instead chose to take on a role in another Marvel film, X-Men: Apocalypse, where she plays mutant Psylocke. “I said, ‘Is there a fight scene?’?” she said of her early meetings with Marvel. “The fight scene could be her monologue.” In fact, Olivia was so keen for her character’s brute strength to be the focus, she was actually happy to have fewer lines than her co-stars, which include Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James MCAvoy. “I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters, and I said, ‘Yes, as long as you’re not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities.’ And they (Marvel) said, ‘Yes, that’s an important part.’?” she explained. While Olivia is pleased with her choice of superhero blockbuster, she confessed there is a fake side to being in Hollywood which doesn’t appeal to her.
“I meet famous people who I’m super excited to meet, and I felt the same way the rest of the world felt - they’re gonna be so awesome - and it’s so different,” she said. “Not just different in the fact they’re not jovial and funny and sarcastic and likeable, but in the worst-case scenario, which is they’re not nice to other people. It kind of breaks your spirit. And you wonder: To get to this level of success, do I have to be like that?” X-Men: Apocalypse hits cinemas later this month (May16).
