Harry Potter is still casting a spell on readers, according to figures released yesterday. The final instalment in JK Rowling's series about the boy wizard was the most popular title in UK libraries last year. American writer James Patterson is Britain's most borrowed author for the second year running, with several books appearing in the top 20 titles. Public Lending Right, a body which gives authors the right to remuneration from the public's use of their work, examined lending between July 2007 and June 2008. The most popular title was JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne - about a boy who goes to live next to Auschwitz concentration camp and befriends one of the prisoners - was the most loaned in Northern Ireland. Jamie Oliver's Jamie at Home was the most popular cookbook, and The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins was the most in-demand science book. Former advertising executive Patterson has written more than 50 novels and with the help of cowriters produces up to eight books each year.
