YouTube hits one billion views a day

YouTube is now serving over one billion views per day as it celebrates the third anniversary of being acquired by Google. To mark the milestone, there is a celebratory logo on the YouTube website on Friday (yesterday). Chad Hurley, YouTubes chief executive and co-founder wrote on the video sharing sites blog: Three years ago today... wed just made headlines by joining with Google in our shared goal of organising the worlds information (in our case video) and making it easily and quickly accessible to anyone, anywhere. Today, Im proud to say that we have been serving well over a billion views a day on YouTube. This is great moment in our short history and we owe it all to you. He went onto to detail how aspects of the site have had to move with the times: As bandwidth has increased, so has our video quality. As weve started to see demand for longer, full-length content, weve brought more shows and movies to the site. There are now more ways than ever to make and consume content, and more of you are looking to turn your hobby into a real business. Yesterday The Telegraph revealed that YouTube is on the brink of signing its first formal full-length content deal with a British broadcaster - Channel 4. Both parties had been in talks for at least the last six months and a contract is expected to be signed imminently. The Telegraph understands that Channel 4 has negotiated the right to sell its own advertising around its content on YouTube and share the revenue with the Google-owned site. Telegraph The Channel 4 service on YouTube is expected to offer users a 30-day catch up window, as it already does via 4 on Demand, with the same amount of content. The Google-owned site has previously signed similar full-length deals in the US and has publicly expressed interest in signing other content deals around the world. Hurley concluded his blog post by saying: Were working hard to keep up with the fast pace of technology to bring you everything you would expect from the worlds largest video site: better quality; a full spectrum of choices and tools for users, partners and advertisers; and ways to make the YouTube experience your own anywhere, anytime.
