Lahore-Sanam Chaudhri does not need any introduction as she is one of the most leading names in the fashion industry.
She started her label in 2009. Giving new dimensions to the prêt line garnered attention for her designs in a very short period of time. She started working as an interior designer for a reputable architectural firm to dabble in designing clothes on a very small scale and today her brand is known as one of the top fashion brands in Industry. Since its inception, the vision and goal she has always been to produce high quality garments in line with international standards under the supervision of trained fashion management.
In an exclusive interview with the Nation she talks about her career in the fashion industry. Following are excerpts of the interview:
Tell us about yourself and how did you start in the fashion industry?
I worked as an interior designer for a reputable architectural firm when i started to dabble in designing clothes on a very small scale. One thing led to another and here I am.
What inspired you to choose this profession?
I am a textile major so I think it had to be happened at some time. Designing was always on the cards.
Is it difficult to become a fashion designer in this Patriarchal society?
It’s not difficult to become a fashion designer; however it is a challenge to stand out and be noticed.
What does the Sanam Chaudhri’s brand stand for?
Chickness and simplicity
What is your design philosophy?
Less is always more
What is one change that you want to see in prêt clothing in Pakistan?
Individuality in brands.
What message do you want to give to young designers?
I’d tell them that the industry is saturated and if they really want to make their mark, it should be an ingenious one!
What are the dressing essentials that every woman should have in her wardrobe?
Black trousers, white men tailored shirt and a pair of hot stilettos.
With so much competition in the market, how does one manage to stay in business?
My product serves a niche market, and I stay afloat because I cater to a certain aesthetic.
Of all the models, whom do you think looks best in your outfits?
I think Nooray Bhatti pulls off my designs very well.
What’s your dream project?
I’m still trying to discover my dream project.
