Triptych, 1976, sold for $86.3m, beating the previous highest price for a Bacon work, the $52.7m (27m) paid for Study For Innocent X. It was the second record for a contemporary artwork this week, after a piece by Bacon's long time friend Lucian Freud, titled Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, fetched $33m (17m) at Christie's on Tuesday, beating the record for a work by a living artist. The sale was part of the most lucrative night in Sotheby's nearly 300-year history, as it took $362m (186m) including commission. - Daily Telegraph
