Russian craft brings back astronauts

ARKALYK, Kazakhstan (AFP) - A Russian Soyuz space capsule brought a US astronaut and two Russians safely back to Earth from the International Space Station (ISS) Wednesday, with the crew parachuting down in the Kazakh steppe. All the crew members are in good health, the Russian Federal Space Agency said in a statement. All the descent and landing operations were carried out normally. The Soyuz craft brought back Russian cosmonauts Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka and US astronaut Scott Kelly after a five month stint during which they conducted regular experiments and space station repairs. Kelly is the brother-in-law of US lawmaker Gabrielle Giffords. Giffords astronaut husband Mark Kelly, who is Scotts twin brother, said last month that he will lead the final mission of the space shuttle Endeavour in April. The Russian capsules safe return came two days after the Russian space agency announced a delay in the next Soyuz mission that was originally scheduled for March 30 due to a technical fault.
