California indie rockers Avi Buffalo, who have won a growing fan base and acclaim at a young age, have announced that the band is over as touring takes a toll.
‘The Avi Buffalo project went too far, and I don’t think this project was meant for even the minute exposure on a ‘professional’ scale that it got, as it ended up causing a lot more pain and drained my creative energy,’ frontman and songwriter Avi Zahner-Isenberg wrote on Facebook. ‘It makes me wake up sick, confused, depressed, out of touch with myself and irrelevant to current music’s existence,’ he said.
Zahner-Isenberg began performing as a teenager around the Los Angeles area, developing a retro sound with lo-fi guitar and piano that at times evoked the Beatles coupled by bleak, if ironic, lyrics. Avi Buffalo released a self-titled debut in 2010 which became a favorite among indie music watchers both in North America and in Europe, where the band played major festivals including Glastonbury. The band took a break before releasing a second album, ‘At Best Cuckold,’ last year and embarking on another tour. But Zahner-Isenberg wrote: ‘Touring sucks and isn’t worth it.’ Now 24, Zahner-Isenberg said he wanted to ‘experience things like romantic relationships and live in one place at a time such as Los Angeles or New York or anywhere else with a large and exciting concentration of beautiful artists to work with and learn from every day.’
Zahner-Isenberg said he planned to keep busy with other musical projects, including as a producer.
