Gangs of New York to become TV series

MARTIN Scorsese is developing his hit 2002 film Gangs of New York into a TV series. The 70-year-old director is working alongside Miramax to adapt his Academy Award-nominated film into a potential series. Speaking about the project, Scorsese said: “This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film. A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colourful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life. I am excited to partner with Miramax in telling these stories.” The series, which has yet to be tied to a US TV network, will reportedly draw from the events that took place in the movie, and will be set at the turn of the century. The action is said to be set in both Chicago and New York. Chairman for Miramax Richard Nanula said that Scorsese’s “dedication to quality and the art of storytelling continues to excite everyone that works with him”.     –GN
