Afghan violence kills 3 US, Nato soldiers

KABUL (AFP) - Bomb attacks and a firefight killed three foreign soldiers, one of them identified as an American, in separate incidents in war-torn Afghanistan on Monday, NATO said. Two of the soldiers, including the American, were killed by improvised bombs, which have become a major asset in the arsenal of Taliban-led insurgents, NATOs International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said. ISAF did not disclose the nationalities of the two other casualties, who it said were killed in separate incidents in southern and western Afghanistan. Two brief statements from ISAF announced the soldiers deaths, but gave no specific details of where the incidents had taken place. An ISAF service member from the United States was killed today in an IED strike in southern Afghanistan, the force said earlier Monday. Meanwhile, a soldier of Colombian origin serving in the Spanish army died Monday, and six others were injured, after their convoy struck a mine in Afghanistan, a defence ministry spokesman said. The soldiers were escorting a convoy from the World Food Programme when their vehicle hit the mine north of Qala-I-Naw in Badghis province in the northwest of the war-ravaged country, the spokesman said. Jon Felipe Romero Meneses, 21, was of Colombian origin but it was not immediately clear if he held Spanish citizenship, he added. Meneses was one of three NATO soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan on Monday.
