Afghanistan asks Iran to provide exact figure of Afghan refugees

Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Iran to provide the exact number of Afghan refugees imprisoned in Iran. Iran's foreign ministry promised to provide the exact number of Afghan prisoners to the Afghan government, Ahmad Zaher Faqiri said. Last week, Afghan Justice Minister remarked that around five thousand Afghans were in Iranian prisons. Some time ago Afghan foreign minister on a visit to Iran discussed Afghan prisoners in Iran with officials in Tehran and asked for the exact number of the prisoners, Mr Faqiri said. "Around 5,000 Afghans are imprisoned in Iran, sixty percent of them being held on drug related charges," Habibullah Ghaleb, Afghan Justice Minister told reporters. "During a meeting between Afghan foreign minister and his Iranian counterpart, Afghan number of prisoners in Iran was discussed. And Iranian officials promised him to provide the number," Mr Faqiri said. Officials in Tehran had made a strong promise to release around 700 Afghan detainees during Afghan minister's visit last month. Iran holds numerous Afghans in detention with most of them sentenced to execution over charges of drug trafficking.
