I'm not finished with Tests, says Brett Lee

SYDNEY (AFP) Australian fast bowler Brett Lee said Sunday he was far from finished as a Test cricketer following his latest injury setback. Lee, 32, returned home on Sunday with an elbow injury which forced him out of Australias seven-match one-day series in India. The one-time pace spearhead is bidding to recover in time for the opening Test against the West Indies, starting in Brisbane on November 26. I certainly have not ruled out playing Test match cricket and that is definitely the most important thing that I want to achieve - to get back in and play Test match cricket, Lee told reporters. Lee said he will consult a specialist this week about his elbow complaint and is hopeful of being fit to play for New South Wales in their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania starting November 17. The elbow injury continues a run of misfortune for Lee over the past 12 months. He spent the early part of this year recovering from foot and ankle surgery before suffering a side strain early in the Ashes tour and missed all five Tests against England. He performed strongly in Australias Champions Trophy triumph in South Africa last month before being named man-of-the-series as NSW captured the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 title in India. But the latest setback raises doubts about Lees future in the longest form of the game and whether his body is able to withstand the rigours of Test cricket. I can only do what I suppose I do best on the cricket field and that is take wickets and score runs down the bottom order, he said. I would have loved to have played those last two Test matches in England, but that is all behind me now and the way I was playing in the Champions Trophy and the Champions League I was really happy with my form. The only thing I can do is play the type of cricket I can when it is on offer. It is unfortunate I have picked up this elbow injury, but I do not see it as a long-term injury. Lee has played 76 Tests since his debut in December 1999, taking 310 wickets at 30.82 and he last played Test cricket against South Africa in Melbourne in the 2008 Boxing Day match. Meanwhile, Australias injury woes continued unabated Sunday with all-rounder James Hopes being ruled out of the remainder of the one-day series against India. Hopes, 31, will return to Australia to continue his recovery from a right hamstring injury suffered during the first one-day international at Vadodara, Cricket Australia said in a statement. Hopes has done everything he can with the medical staff to try and make himself available for the remaining games of the tour of India, physiotherapist Kevin Sims said in the statement. However due to the compressed nature of this tour and his speed of recovery so far we feel now we have insufficient time to have Hopes fully fit to take part in the remaining games of this series. Therefore a decision has been made that Hopes will return to Australia where he will continue his rehabilitation from this hamstring injury. Hopes, who has 1,000 runs and 54 wickets from 67 ODIs, is the third Australian player to fly back home during this seven-match series. Pace spearhead Brett Lee (elbow) and wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine (finger) are already back in Australia tending to their injuries. Injury doubts over Sehwag, Gambhir Indias key batsmen Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are injury doubts for the fourth one-day international against Australia here on Monday. Sehwag was struck on his left foot by a Peter Siddle yorker while Gambhir was hit below the ear by a pull shot from Australian captain Ricky Ponting during the third one-dayer in New Delhi on Saturday. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has been called up to the squad as cover, a statement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Sunday. Dinesh Karthik will be joining the Indian team in Mohali, BCCI Secretary N. Srinivasan said in a statement. A final decision on the availability of Sehwag and Gambhir for the fourth match will be taken on the morning of the game. India lead the seven-match series 2-1 after victories at New Delhi and Nagpur. Australia won the opening match at Vadodara by four runs. Karthik, 24, was overlooked for the current series after featuring in the Champions Trophy in South Africa in September-October. He has scored 502 runs in 33 one-day internationals at 23.90 and is also likely to be a backup for captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps. Gambhir struck fine half-centuries in the first two matches but was out for six in the third match, which India won by six wickets on Saturday. Sehwags top score in the series has been the 41 he made in Nagpur. Victorian fast bowler Clinton McKay has been named as a replacement for Lee while New South Wales all-rounder Moises Henriques will now remain with the squad for the rest of the matches. India lead the series 2-1 going into the fourth match at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here on Monday.
