US President Barack Obama will chair a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council on nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament on September 24. The head-of-the-state level meeting is being convened by the US in its capacity as the Security Council President for the month of September. This would be the first time Mr. Obama would be chairing a UNSC meeting. "The Security Council has an essential role in preventing the spread and use of nuclear weapons and is also the world's principal multilateral instrument for global security cooperation," US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said in a statement. She said the session will be focused on nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament broadly and not on any specific countries. "Over the next several weeks, we will work closely with members of the Security Council to prepare for this important meeting," Ms. Rice said.
