Famine warned in eastern Sudan

KHARTOUM (AFP) - Government inaction will lead to famine in eastern Sudan in the coming days because of water shortages, poor crops and spiralling food prices, regional party the Beja Congress said on Tuesday. If the government does not do anything to solve the problem in the coming days, there will be a famine in eastern Sudan, party spokesman Salah Barkawin told AFP. He said people in the region were poor and could not afford to buy sorghum, a Sudanese staple that has more than doubled in price. In August we warned the government to take care of eastern Sudan because of the rain shortage this year.
