Norway joins EU sanctions against Syria

OSLO (AFP) - Norway, which is not a member of the European Union, said Tuesday it would adopt the bloc's sanctions imposed on Syria to protest against Damascus' violent repression of demonstrators. "Despite international condemnation, the Syrian regime has not renounced using violence against its own people," Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said in a statement. "We therefore agree with the very clear European signals to the Syrian regime and Norway will as a result adhere to the enlarged measures adopted by the EU against Syria," he added. The EU on Friday adopted a ban on crude oil imports, expected to hit hard at Damascus as the EU buys 95 percent of Syria's crude, providing a third of the regime's hard currency earnings. It has not excluded further sanctions.
