JAKARTA (Reuters/AFP) - Complaints of voter list irregularities by the two challengers for Indonesias presidency dogged the last hours before the election on Wednesday (today), with one camp alleging problems with up to 20 million names. The liberal ex-general is hoping to avoid a run-off in September by beating opposition leader Megawati Sukarnoputri and outgoing Vice-President Jusuf Kalla with a clear majority in the first round. Opinion polls have consistently shown that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will trounce his rivals in Wednesdays vote, winning a second term and a chance to quicken the pace of reform in Southeast Asias biggest economy. Polling booths will still open for some 176 million voters across the sprawling archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, despite days of griping by the teams of former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and Vice-President Jusuf Kalla about duplicate names and even the names of dead people on electoral rolls. There is a risk that a last-minute concession to the challenger camps allowing people with only an identity card to vote could be a recipe for chaos and protests at polling booths. The disputes over inaccurate voter lists were settled after Megawati - an ex-president and daughter of independence hero Sukarno - obliquely suggested Yudhoyonos supporters were trying to rig the vote. In a dramatic ruling late Monday, the Constitutional Court changed voter registration rules to allow Indonesians left off the rolls to cast their ballots with identity cards. Lets make polls a success. Dont let the world see improper things happening in Indonesia, Yudhoyono said in response to the ruling. Tomorrow is your day... You who have the right and opportunity to vote freely without intimidation and pressure from anyone, he added Tuesday, in a speech at the presidential palace. Megawati called on Indonesians to vote with a clear and honest mind. We are convinced that we can create a better future, she said. If Yudhoyono takes more than half of the votes there will be no need for a run-off with the runner-up. A clear picture of the result should emerge by around 2 pm (0700 GMT) on Wednesday. Away from the jousting in Jakarta over electoral rolls, officials across the worlds third-largest democracy prepared for the vote, only its second direct election for a president. On the resort island of Bali, election officers wearing traditional sarongs and kebaya blouses set up polling stations in Tanjung Benoa, as tourists sunbathed on a nearby tropical beach. However, the atmosphere was tense in Papua, where extra police and special forces were on standby after recent violence linked to separatists in the remote province. Papuans wearing traditional penis gourds looked on as booths were set up using traditional woven bags instead of ballot boxes. Today, some analysts see Indonesia on another brink - of economic take-off and joining the emerging BRIC economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China. A victory for Yudhoyono, widely known as SBY, would most likely bring a renewed push for reform to attract foreign investment, create jobs and shore up flagging economic growth. Megawatis running-mate, Prabowo Subianto, told reporters he believed there were problems with many more. We expect it could be potentially as many as 20m names, he said.
