Russia reports ethnic cleansing

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday said "ethnic cleansing" had been reported in villages in South Ossetia, as he pointed an accusing finger at the West for extending military aid to Georgia. "We have heard about ethnic cleansing in villages in South Ossetia," Lavrov said in televised remarks. "The number of refugees is growing. A humanitarian crisis is looming." Lavrov called on the West to reach "the right conclusions" about the South Ossetian conflict, saying the Georgian offensive had been made possible by Western military aid to Tbilisi. "Now we see Georgia has found a use for these weapons and for the special forces that were trained with the help of international instructors," the Foreign Minister said. "I think our European and American colleagues ... should understand what is happening. And I hope very much that they will reach the right conclusions."
