Dominican Republic probes 11 child deaths in hospital

SANTO DOMINGO: Eleven children died over a three-day period in a hospital in the Dominican Republic this month, sparking the launch of a government investigation. Eight of them were infants less than a year old. A special commission had been created to investigate the deaths last weekend, said Health Minister Freddy Hidalgo. All 11 died at Robert Reid Cabral Hospital, the poor Caribbean country’s main health center for children. Hospital officials said they were admitted for a variety of ailments including lung or heart trouble, gastrointestinal problems or infections. In recent months doctors at the hospital have complained about equipment and conditions there.
