TRIPOLI (AFP) - A former senior Al-Qaeda member and Guantanamo detainee, Ali Mohammed al-Fakheri, also known as Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi, has committed suicide in his Libyan prison cell, a newspaper reported on Sunday. The Oea paper said that Fakheri, 46, who was serving a life sentence after his extradition from Cuba in 2006, had taken his own life, but it gave no details or date. He had been in charge of Khalden, an Al-Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan, but was captured by the US-led coalition which invaded the country in 2001 as he tried to cross the border to Pakistan. The newspaper said a Human Rights Watch mission had recently visited Fakheri in jail in Libya, which in January called on the US to extradite the nine other Libyans held at Guantanamo since 2002.
