No specific request to help resolve Kashmir: US

WASHINGTON - A US State Department spokesman, responding to President Asif Ali Zardaris call for the Obama administration to mediate the Kashmir dispute, said Thursday that no specific request has so far been received to play that role. Im not aware that weve been asked to play a specific role at this point, Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs PJ Crowley said, when ask for his comments on the presidents article in The New York Times in which the Pakistani leader asked for Washingtons help to resolve the decades-old Kashmir question for progress toward South Asian stability. First of all, I thought it was a fine op-ed. And secondly, we understand the importance of the Kashmir issue to both Pakistan and India, and it is something that we do discuss with both countries, the spokesman said. But obviously, at the end of a process that has to be something that is resolved ultimately between Pakistan and India with the active involvement of the people of Kashmir, he added. Earlier, this week top US military officer Admiral Mike Mullen said Kashmir was a principal concern which Pakistan and India will have to decide for long-term security.
