Pakistan elected to UNESCO's board

UNITED NATIONS - Pakistan was re-elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) by the agency's General Council on Wednesday for a four-year term, beginning January 1, 2016, according to report received here.
The elections in the 195-member Council to the 58-member board were held at UNESCO's Headquarters in Paris.
Pakistan, with 135 votes, won one of six seats reserved for the Asia-Pacific region, for which eight countries contested.
Others elected were: Malaysia: (165 votes); Vietnam (156); Sri Lanka (149), South Korea (137), and Iran (128). Samoa (101 votes) and Afghanistan (62) could not get elected.
Pakistan has been a member of UNESCO since its independence in 1947, except for a four-year period from 1974-78.
UNESCO, a specialised UN agency,is mandated to promoting peace and security through international collaboration in the field of education, science, and culture to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the United Nations Charter.
