Firefighters battle blazes in California

Firefighters were battling two wind-whipped wildfires in Los Angeles and an exclusive California enclave early Saturday that threatened homes and forced 10,000 people to flee. A fire that erupted late Friday on the northern outskirts of Los Angeles had burnt at least 10 homes, ripped through 2,600 acres (1,052 hectares) and had prompted 10,000 residents to evacuate, authorities said. The fire, near the community of Sylma also forced the partial evacuation of a hospital and was threatening 1,000 more homes, according to figures from the Los Angeles City Fire Department. The cause of the fire was not yet known and at least one person had been seriously injured.
