Heavy rains in Nicaragua leave six dead

MANAGUA - Six people have died and more than 35,000 have been affected by heavy rains so far this month in Nicaragua, the government said in a report. Torrential rain has caused damage in 11 of the country’s 17 departments, where 35,250 people, 7,041 houses, 12 schools, a church and a health center have been affected, it said. Two children were among the dead killed by flowing water or lightening. The government urged people living near volcano slopes to take action against possible landslides.
‘The slopes of volcanoes in the country are quite unstable so during heavy rains landslides may occur at high speeds,’ Guillermo Gonzalez, director of the national disaster prevention agency SINAPRED said Sunday.
