Russia detains 2 in defence ministry probe

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian police on Friday detained two top executives at a military contractor in the wake of a far-reaching corruption probe in the defence ministry which already resulted in the minister’s ouster. The head and chief accountant of a Moscow-based company that was contracted by the defence ministry to provide maintenance of ministry-owned properties were detained as part of a criminal investigation into fraud, the Investigative Committee said in a statement. The company failed to do any works on the Moscow building of the ministry’s housing department and, together with ministry officials, “signed sham documents for completed works and bills which stipulated payment of over 53.6 million rubles ($1.7 million),” the statement said.
