THE HAGUE (AFP) - The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court received more information Friday from Palestinian officials pressing him to launch a war crimes investigation against Israel, the court said. The prosecutor ... Luis Moreno-Ocampo received a Palestinian delegation headed by Dr Ali Khashan, Minister of Justice of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), said a court statement. The delegation submitted legal arguments backing the PNAs bid to accept the courts jurisdiction over crimes committed during Israels military offensive against Hamas in Gaza in January. The office of the prosecutor will carefully examine all supporting arguments submitted, starting with the initial issue of whether the declaration by the PNA accepting the exercise of jurisdiction by the ICC meets statutory requirements, said the statement. It quoted Moreno-Ocampo as saying: We appreciate the efforts undertaken by the PNA and the extensive legal arguments presented on a highly complex area of law. Khashan had also met Moreno-Ocampo in February, submitting documents that the PNA claims prove that the Palestinian territories are a legal state with the right to request a probe. Moreno-Ocampo is investigating whether there is such a legal entity as a Palestinian state, a precursor to a possible investigation. The Rome Statute that created the ICC determines that only a state can accept the courts jurisdiction. The prosecutor on Friday also met John Dugard, the author of a report on the Gaza offensive for the Arab League, in the context of ongoing consultations.
