Haqqani network targeted Kabul summit: Holbrooke

The U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan says the al-Qaida-allied Haqqani insurgent network targeted the venue of a major Kabul summit this week. Richard Holbrooke told reporters in London on Friday that the Haqqani network "were targeting the building we were meeting in a few days ago," when representatives from about 60 nations gathered as the largest group of foreign officials in Afghanistan since the 1970s. He did not specify. The Haqqani network directs operations against U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan from safe havens in Pakistan.
