Strike over killings shuts down IHK

SRINAGAR (AFP) - Streets of Srinagar were deserted for the second day running Tuesday in response to a strike called to protest the deaths of three young Kashmiris. A 17-year-old student was killed by a police tear gas shell during an anti-India protest on June 11. A day later paramilitary troops allegedly beat up a protester who died in hospital on Saturday. A third Kashmiri was killed on Sunday when paramilitary forces opened fire after mourners of the man who died on Saturday tried to set fire to a bunker. Kashmiri leaders had urged people to observe the strike on Monday, but extended it by a day 'to protest the ongoing killings of innocent Kashmiris. The strike closed shops, schools and government offices for the second day running and most of the traffic stayed off the roads in Srinagar and other towns in the valley. The Indian authorities have imposed strict restrictions on civilian movement in most parts of Srinagar to stem recurring street demonstrations. Tensions have been running high for months after local police accused the military of killing three civilians in April. Meanwhile, Indian security forces said Tuesday they had killed a senior local commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) during a gunbattle that also killed a policeman.
