EU too soft on repressive regimes: HRW

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union is failing to back words with policy measures to force repressive regimes to respect human rights, Human Rights Watch said in a report on Monday. In its 21st annual review of rights, the group singled out the 27-member EU and urged it to bolster diplomacy with action. The ritualistic support of 'dialogue and 'cooperation with repressive governments is too often an excuse for doing nothing about human rights, Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. The EUs 'constructive dialogues are among the most egregious examples of this global trend, he said. In the World Report 2011, the United States-based rights group gave as an example the EUs approach to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, saying the bloc had failed to put sufficient pressure on their governments to change. Turkmenistan has vast energy reserves and Uzbekistan provides military supply transit routes to Afghanistan.
