Srinagar: A soldier was killed in a fierce gunfight that erupted after Kashmiri freedom fighters targeted an Indian Army camp in Tangdhar near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district today, officials said.
Army officials said the armed men were firing at the camp, which is located near the Line of Control, from the Kulsoori ridge. They also hurled grenades at the camp, and there were reports that an army oil depot and some vehicles caught fire. “They have not stormed the camp, but an exchange of fire is on,” said an official.
An officer of the rank of colonel was also injured in the ongoing gunfight with a group of heavily-armed men, reports said. Sources said the injured officer is a deputy commander of the 204 Brigade Tangdhar.
A general alert was sounded in the area and security forces, including the BSF and Jammu and Kashmir police, were asked to increase vigil.
