Samjhota Express reportedly resumes service

Indian authorities have reportedly contacted Pakistan Railways over the resumption of Samjhota Express, few hours after it was announced the train service has been suspended.

According to local media reports, at least 75 passengers will board Samjhota Express from Lahore to New Delhi. Reports added that the train service will resume its operations on both sides of the Attari border.

The Samjhota Express is reportedly scheduled to leave from Lahore to New Delhi at 8am on Monday.

Authorities in India had earlier tightened security on Samjhota Express after a high alert was issued following the terror attack on an army base in Uri sector of Indian-held Kashmir.

However, an Indian officer had said, the move did not affect the number of passengers who travelled by the Samjhota Express, a bi-weekly train that runs from New Delhi to Attari on the border and then to Lahore.

The Border Security Force (BSF), which has sounded an alert along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab, has heightened security at the Attari check post, where thousands of tourists come every day.

Suspected militants attacked the army base on September 18 (Sunday) and killed 17 soldiers. Another soldier, who was injured in the attack, died the very next day after the attack.
