Nuristan province under Taliban control

Kabul: Waygal district in Nuristan province has collapsed into the hands of the Taliban, officials said Friday. ‎

Khalilullah Ziai provincial police chief confirmed the incident and said that two nights ago dozens of Taliban militants attacked the district and heavy clashes started between them and security forces. The district eventually collapsed early Friday morning.

According to Ziai there are casualties on both sides but he did not provide details.

A number of Nuristan representatives in the Lower House of Parliament have also confirmed the collapse of Waygal district.

Taliban has yet to comment about the collapse.

This year's fighting season has seen a sharp spike in insurgent activity on a number of fronts – especially that of armed conflicts in the once secure northern areas of Afghanistan. Currently three other provinces are experiencing fierce fighting between Afghan special forces and the Taliban. These are Baghlan, Kunduz and Takhar.
