KABUL: An Australian aid worker, who was abducted in Afghanistan in May, has been rescued by the National Directorate of Security in the country's eastern Nangarhar province.
Kerry Jane Wilson, 60, was "safely" rescued "from kidnappers during a special operation" by Afghanistan's spy agency, the agency said Monday
Wilson was working for a local non-governmental organisation when she was kidnapped from her office by armed men wearing military uniforms in the eastern city of Jalalabad.
NDS said several suspects were arrested in connection with Wilson's kidnapping and further investigation is ongoing.
Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in a statement confirmed the news, adding that Wilson is now safe and well.
"I deeply appreciate the work of the authorities in Afghanistan whose support and assistance facilitated her release, as well as Australian consular staff who continue to provide assistance to Ms Wilson and her family," Bishop added.
Earlier this month, an Australian academic and an American professor were kidnapped by unidentified armed men in Kabul. Their situation is still unknown.
