French president calls for G20 to discuss international nuclear safety standards

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday invited G20 nations to meet in Paris to discuss international nuclear safety standards. "We call on the independent authorities of G20 members to meet, if possible in Paris, to define an international nuclear safety standard for nuclear power plants," Sarkozy said at a press conference at the French Embassy in Tokyo. "It is absolutely abnormal that these international safety standards do not exist," he said. The president suggested the meeting could be held in May. Sarkozy arrived in Japan on Thursday to express solidarity with the victims of the Japanese disasters and offer the country aid.
