The Supreme Court of Pakistan has announced that it will look into the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) that has benefited President Zardari among others. The controversial law, which was promulgated by the former President General (retired) Pervez Musharraf, was used to withdraw corruption and criminal cases against many influential people in the country. NRO beneficiaries included prominent politicians, bureaucrats and party workers, mostly from the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and MQM. The critics of the law maintain that it is discriminatory and contrary to the fundamental rights of the citizens. The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued an official statement, saying that the chief justice of Pakistan had decided to constitute a larger bench of judges which would hear the petitions against the NRO.
