ISLAMABAD - The Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances has claimed to have traced 56 cases of enforced disappearances during the month of October 2014 in its 237 hearings held at Islamabad and Karachi.
According to details, the commission disposed of total 61 cases of missing persons during the last month and out of the total disposed of cases, 56 cases of missing persons have been traced, three cases have been closed for not being cases of enforced disappearances and two other cases have been deleted due to other reasons.
During October 2014, hearings were held in 113 cases of alleged enforced disappearances at Islamabad, while 124 cases were heard at Karachi.
The commission, comprising former Judge of Supreme Court Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal as its head and Justice (retd) Dr. Ghous Muhammad and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sharif Virk as its members, is continuing investigations in the cases of enforced disappearances.
On 1st January, 2011, 138 cases of missing persons had been transferred to the commission. During the period 1st January, 2011 to 31st October, 2014, the commission received 2128 new cases; thus enhancing the total number of cases to 2266 out of which 963 cases have been disposed of and current balance of the cases under investigation in the commission is 1303.
In the next month, the commission has scheduled its hearings at Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi.
