ISLAMABAD - Research and Development (R&D) sector must approach the industry to know their research needs for need-based research to set certain goals regarding science and technology (S&T) development in the country, said Federal Secretary for S&T Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar on Tuesday.He was addressing as chief guest at the inaugural session of the 3-day Pakistan Congress of Zoology (International), at Jinnah Convention Centre, Islamabad. Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH), a subsidiary of Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) working under Ministry of Science and Technology and Pir Mehar Ali Shah (PMAS) Arid Agriculture University organized this event.Tarar said the R&D organizations should take initiatives to establish linkage with industry to get their input for industry-based research. He said Korea is a success example of making S&T projects. PSF Chairman Prof Dr Manzoor H Soomro addressing the Congress said quality science education was key to solution of all problems including energy crisis, economic and environment problems as well as terrorism. He urged the forum to focus on improving primary education standards to bring a scientific change in the society through inquiry-based science education. He called upon the researchers to understand how the world is changing. Making a mention to European Union (EU) Program Horizon 2020, Dr Soomro said EU’s 7th Framework Program is ending this year but Pakistani researchers won only six projects while Indians succeeded to get 160 projects. He hoped that Pakistan Congress of Zoology would discuss various and diverse topics of Zoology. PMAS Arid Agriculture University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad, President Zoological Society of Pakistan Prof. Dr. M. Afzal Kazmi, Deputy Director General PMNH Muhammad Akhter Javed and PMNH Zoological Sciences Director also addressed the inaugural ceremony.At the inaugural session the Chief Guest, Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar decorated highly talented and acclaimed zoologists with Mujib Memorial Gold Medal, Muzaffer Ahmad Gold Medal, Muhammad Afzal Hussain Qadri Memorial Gold Medal, Prof Imtiaz Ahmad Gold Medal, Ahmad Mohiuddin Memorial Gold Medal, Prof Dr SNH Naqvi Gold Medal, Afsar Mian Gold Medal, Prof AR Shakoori Gold Medal, Prof Dr Mirza Azhar Beg Gold Medal, Prof Dr Nasima M Tirmiza Gold Medal, and Zoologist of the Year Award.During the 3-day Congress of Zoology researchers will present their research work, exchange views, and discuss the problems concerning research in Zoological Sciences. About 1,500 professors, researchers, professionals, field biologists, conservationists, wildlife park managers, foresters, students, Ph.D. scholars, and members of NGOs from national and international institutions are attending the event.
