Davis Cuppers Hameedul Haq, Mushaf flay tennis authorities

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's former Davis Cuppers Mushaf Zia and Hameedul Haq criticised the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) for following a dubious procedure in which hand-picked players were invited for Davis Cup trials. The PTF, instead of conducting open trials, invited seven players including Asim Shafik, Jibran Muhammadi, Jalil Khan, Shahzad Khan, Yasir Khan, Tanveer Ashiq and Nasir Mushtaq. Later on, it also asked Nomi Qamar to take part in the trials starting from February 9 at Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lahore. Two players will be selected for the camp after six-day activity. Aisam and Aqeel are exempted from the trials. While talking to The Nation, Mushaf Zia said that there should be open trials for all the players instead of a small list of blue eyed lads. "Some Pakistanis are playing tennis abroad and through open trials their talent can also be examined, "he maintained. "We have only two top quality players Aisam and Aqeel. Unfortunately, no one is there to fill their shoes in near future. There is need to bridge the gap between seniors and juniors. We should concentrate on building the second and third tier. Without Aisam or Aqeel, we cannot think of winning the Davis Cup tie against even low ranking sides," he sighted. Hameedul Haq also demanded open trials for the selection of national outfits. "The PTF has neglected a shining young player Abid Ali, who is son of a former secretary of the PTF. Abid produced excellent results in the recently-concluded ITF Men's Tennis Futures event held at PTF Tennis Complex and played semi-final," he told The Nation. Hameed further said that Abid was far better a player than Nasir Mushtaq. "Some inept officials are running the federation and they have no idea managing the affairs of a top national body. The federation did not hold the training camp before the ITF junior and ITF Future tournaments. Our players participated without proper training and their performance was well blow par," he added. He said the PTF should hire the services of former players to train the junior player. "There is a gap of around 10 years between the senior and junior players and there is need for a comprehensive plan to bridge this massive gap. The PTF has no plans of grooming international level players after Aisam and Aqeel," he said.
