Influentials eye Margalla Hills

ISLAMABAD Margalla Hills that are part of National Park and are pride of Federal Capital, have become a hot topic among the real estate tycoons as some of them are showing their extreme desire to purchase them. However, according to senior officials of CDA, it is virtually impossible for any property mogul to purchase National Parks lands. Margalla Hills not only attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to see natural beauty of Islamabad but are also considered as a safe haven for wild animals. But some real estate tycoons are suggesting the government to sell a significant part of the hills to pull the country out of existing financial crisis. The Margalla Hills that were preserved as National Park area in 1980 have now become apple of property moguls eyes, who have suggested to the government to sell them out, as they want to build a hill society or town there after crushing the greenery and flora and fauna of the park. It is the most accessible park of country and due to its presence in federal capital and close proximity to Presidency and Parliament House, thousands of people can be seen there enjoying their leisure times. Talking to TheNation, a renowned environmentalist Arshad Abbasi said that Margalla Hills are lungs of Islamabad adding that current rains that lashed the capital were because of the Margalla Hills. He said that if any property dealer managed to purchase these hills to build a housing society then the temperature and energy consumption of the city would rise drastically. Margalla Hills have played a vital part in maintaining the balance between seasonal temperatures and preserving natural serenity of the capital. If Margalla Hills are to be sold then it would be considered as an environmental terror act, he concluded. Former bureaucrat and President Margalla Hills Green Society Roedad Khan while expressing his concern says, Those who were thinking and talking about the sale and purchase of Margalla Hills are living in fools paradise. He said that no one could dare touch Margalla Hills. If some one plans to do it, he can but over our dead bodies, he wowed. He, however, said that during the regime of dictator Gen (Retd) Musharraf, one such threat surfaced when some highly resourceful persons wanted to destroy Margalla Hills through a Tunnel Project. But their bid was foiled by people and media, he said. It is relevant to note here that previous government was about to start a 'Tunnel Project in the guise of overcoming growing housing shortage in Islamabad and for providing an easy link to the northern areas of the country, but they could not do it because of mounting criticism by the environmentalists.
