Culture wing yet to clear dues

ISLAMABAD - Despite extensive efforts of artists' community to get their dues clear, high-ups of the Cultural Wing of Pakistan People's Party have turned deaf ear to clear their dues. The Cultural Wing of Pakistan People's Party has so far failed to safeguard artists' rights despite its claims of reviving nose-diving art and culture industry of the country by uplifting socio-economic condition of the artists folk. Consequently, artists have been deprived of their basic amenities that they deserve. During an exclusive interview with TheNation on Monday, several artists complained about the attitude of Cultural Wing of PPP officials, alleging that instead to work for their betterment, an official of the Wing was not making hurdles in the way of clearing their arrears. We are just artists and don't want to indulge in politics. We just want that President of the Wing should clear our dues and then we will leave this platform, they added. They also demanded of the federal government to immediately resolve their problems and initiate the projects that would help the artists in overcoming their financial constraints. Gul Muhammad, a singer and ex-secretary coordination of Cultural Wing of PPP informed that we have been in contact with President of People's Cultural Wing Sadaf Murtaza for the last several months. "She has agreed to resolve our problems in a short span of time, but so far did noting in this regard and now she is even avoiding to negotiate with us," she deplored. He informed that we have also tried to meet Mustafa Qureshi, President of Cultural Wing of Pakistan People's Party Punjab, but he could not be contacted owing to his illness. He said that I was legally appointed as Secretary Coordination of Wing but  when demanded accounts record as it was also  my responsibility, the high-ups of Wing did not provide me any record. "Even though officials of the Wing have always got big sponsors from different companies in the name of PPP but they are just misusing name of the party as they did not spend any amount even for those artists who work for the wing or  deserve it being the members of the wing," he added. He informed that about 300 to 400 artists have been associated with People's Cultural Wing. Another artist while seeking anonymity, said that it should be in priorities of the Wing to facilitate artists but Sadaf Murtaza is just using our names for minting money. "Then why we work without salary?" she questioned. To a question, she informed that Rukhasana Murtaza, Sabir Sunny, Zahid Ali, Zahid Husain, Hina Sidque,Noman Lashari, Anwar Saeed, Khalid Sadeqi, Mehmooda Qamar, Shamma Adel, Sonia Azeem and Gull Muhammad are among those artists who did not receive their dues. When contacted by TheNation, President of Cultural Wing of Pakistan People's Party Sadaf Murtaza behaved rudely and avoided giving any detail description regarding this matter, saying "There is no party that pays artists then why they expect from PPP." To a question, she said that I don't want to talk to anyone and no one should ask me in this regard. It is worth mentioning here that artists collectively held protest against People's Cultural Wing in recent past. They also held several meeting with President of Wing but so far no step for their welfare in sight.
