3 more women held for abducting, selling newborns

ISLAMABAD - Ramna police have arrested three more women in connection with a case involving abduction and selling of newborns.
Local police registered a case a few days back after it came to know about the abduction and selling of newborns under the garb of social work. Tahira Gul, who was president of the NGO ‘Adopt Baby Islamabad’, and her son Shehzad Ali Zaib were arrested after a person from Lahore reported the matter to the police. The duo confessed to police that they had sold at least 12 babies in the last few months. They had bought babies from a woman running an NGO in Peshawar. Upon their information, the Ramna police have arrested three more women from Peshawar and Mardan and further investigation is underway.
The criminals had set up their office in sector G-10 of the federal capital. The couple had been running an NGO and bought babies for Rs 100,000 to Rs 170,000 each from a woman in Peshawar. They would then report each baby to the police as an abandoned child found in a crib placed outside their home, where they ran the NGO. This was how they gave legal cover to the business by registering the sale of a baby as adoption in the court of a magistrate. A local magistrate had on Monday sent the accused on three-day physical remand for allegedly stealing newborns from hospitals and selling them. The suspects stole newborns in connivance with maternity ward staffers at the hospitals.
