ISLAMABAD - The pollution level has reached at alarming level in the Federal Capital due to massive construction works and vehicles travelling on unpaved diversionary routes. The World Environment Day was observed on Friday in Pakistan too like other parts of the globe with solemn pledge to address the environmental challenges for achieving development objectives. A number of awareness rising and other such activities were also arranged throughout country in connection with celebration of the day in a benefiting manner. However, rapid increase in pollution level with every passing day and the adverse impact of climate change on population, economy and natural resources calls for effective strategies on the parts of quarters concerned for addressing environmental degradations. The high level of air and water pollution is not only issue of the dense populated areas of the country but the situation of metropolitan has also become more exacerbating due to massive construction work of development projects. Enormous construction activities at diverse areas of the Capital City coupled with uncovered piles of earth and other material at the construction sites have created fugitive dust particles, which polluted the air. The situation has become more aggravated whenever construction area is enveloped in thick fog-like dust on some windy days, which are quite a common phenomenon in Islamabad. The dreadful condition of environment is getting bleaker because adequate support and regulatory measures could not be adopted so far. The Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) together with provincial environmental protection agencies had started the process of establishing an air quality monitoring system in five cities (Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta) in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The project envisaged the installation of fixed and mobile air monitoring stations in these five cities to collect data about the ambient air quality. But until now this air monitoring system has not been fully instituted. As TheNation contacted several officials of the Federal Environment Agency for getting compiled data regarding prevailed level of air pollution but all in vain. Most of the official just informed that they are going to on air daily pollution level of different cities in near future. However, it was learnt that the concentration of fine particulate matter were alarmingly high in all the cities of the country, including Islamabad. It was also learnt that Japanese expert are in town these days. The visiting experts would evaluate the already installed air control monitoring stations and would review the project and make recommendation for effective management of the project. It is to be mentioned here that particulate matter (PM) also known as particle pollution, is a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets. It is made up of a number of components, including acids, organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles.
