Islamabad to have six more police stations

ISLAMABAD (APP) - Six new police stations have been proposed in Islamabad to effectively control the crime, the police sources said. The sources said that a summary is in the Ministry of Interior which has given the approval to go ahead so as to combat crime and ensure effective policing in the Capital. It is to be mentioned that presently 15 police stations including a woman police station are functioning in Islamabad while construction work on 'Ramna Police station in sector D-12 is almost completed. Few police stations of ICT police are functioning in private building which include Women police station, Nilor Police station and Koral police station. For purchase of land and construction of Nilor police station, Director General, Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH) has been requested to allot land at PINSTECH for construction of Nilor police station. For purchase of land for construction of police station Koral, action is being taking by the Chief Commissioner Islamabad. After the allotment/purchase of land, CDA will be requested for construction of the building. However, police stations in the rural suburbs of Islamabad present a pathetic picture with their existing one-room structures in dilapidated condition and lacking the most basic facilities. Their plight is in sharp contrast to the standard maintained by the police stations in the urban areas of the capital. The single room police stations do not have space for visitors, with 10 to 12 police personnel crammed into the limited place to do their daily routine work in a state of congestion. The situation of the reporting room is very poor and the broken chairs and tables are placed for the policemen (Muharrars) and for the visitors as well. Nothing seems like a police station than a building of ghosts. Sometimes, the detained persons are also asked to sit in the reporting room. The roofs of these police stations are also in dilapidated conditions. In few police stations, the accommodation of the Station House Officers is also in the police station, limiting the capacity for the routine work. Only the room of Sub-Divisional Police Officer is in better condition and its operator also has a separate room. When contacted, the police sources termed the lack of budget as the main reason for poor infrastructure at the rural police stations. Inspector General of Police Syed Kaleem Imam said that there is a need of 952 policemen for the new proposed police station in Capital. Meanwhile, the police spokesman said that the IGP is trying his best for the change in police culture and has stressed to facilitate the public through improving infrastructure at police stations. Main focus of the IGP is to ensure friendly police culture and has categorically directed the police personnel to focus on redressing public grievances rather than using delaying tactics in resolving complaints, he added.
