Torrential rains hamper rescue, relief efforts: Chairman NDMA

The torrential rains are hampering the relief work and all the helicopters meant for dropping food supplies to the flood affected people have been grounded and are waiting for the weather to clear up.Talking to BBC, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Gen (Retd) Nadeem Ahmed has said that it has been tried to meet the shortfall of relief work by launching boat rescue perations but boats cannot operate in deep areas. He said that people in flood hit areas should not attempt to come out of water themselves and advised them to stay at higher places and wait for rescue boat or helicopter to arrive. He maintained that when people try to come out of water they endanger their life which is unnecessary. The water bed is vast and they will be unable to cross it, therefore, the safest option is to stay at higher places and wait for rescuers. To a question, he said that the land has no ability to absorb rain water, therefore, rains definitely add to water level. We thought earlier that once the water would flow out of Khyber- Pakhtoonkhawa, everything would be alright but it did not happen and water level has again risen in those areas he said.
