ISLAMABAD - Emphasising the importance of institutional development, Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani called upon the Ministry of Postal Services to reorganise and modernise the department to come up to peoples expectations by adopting best practices of efficient management and taking measures for better marketing, product development and service delivery. The Prime Minister expressed these views while chairing a briefing of the Pakistan Post to review its performance and future plans at the Postal Staff College here today. The Prime Minister directed the Ministry to ensure delivery of cost-effective, client-responsive and real-time postal service to the people. Underscoring the need for up-gradation of infrastructure and office environment, the Prime Minister asked the Pakistan Post to modernise in order to compete with the private sector and re-engineer its business procedures by integrating automation in running the organisation. The Prime Minister further emphasised that both range and delivery of postal service should be upgraded by focusing on express mail delivery system to match private couriers in terms of time and cost efficiency. The Prime Minister appreciated the Pakistan Post for carrying out schemes like saving bank services, payment to pensioners, life insurance, payment of money orders under Benazir Income Support Programme and Food Scheme by relying on their existing institutional facilities. However, the Prime Minister observed that the Ministry should further improve delivery in these areas for early realization of stated objectives of these schemes. Earlier, Federal Minister for Postal Service, Mir Israr ullah Zahri, gave an overview of the working of the Ministry. He informed the meeting that Pakistan Post is committed to providing reliable and affordable domestic as well as international postal and allied services to the people of Pakistan. Secretary/DG Postal Service apprised the meeting that efforts are underway to transform Pakistan Post into a vibrant, modern, customer-friendly and self-sustainable service organisation. The Minister also presented a cheque amounting to Rs 3.6 million to the Prime Minister for PMs Special Fund for the Relief of Victims of Terrorism.
